Handicapped people are a regular part of society yet they still get shunned. I’ll shamefully admit to being intimidated, uncomfortable sometimes around them and I feel guilty about it. The European firm Pro Infirmis provides help for people in how to cope with their disability and how to structure a daily routine in addition to helping provide accommodation and offering support with regard to human relationships.

They recently made this PSA from an experiment using a person dressed in a bear costume giving hugs to real people on a public street. Initially people have no trouble hugging the bear, at the end we see that under the costume is a disabled man.

Their point is you can give hugs to everyone, including disabled people, without them wearing a bear suit. Handicapped people are a regular part of our society.

So, get closer.
